Alcohol-induced diseases and their complications!!

Liver is one of the most vital organs of the body. It normally breaks down alcohol so that it can be eliminated from your body. However if alcohol is consumed in excess amount than the normal then liver functioning gets disturbed including normal breakdown of fats, protein and carbohydrates.

It further leads to several alcohol induced liver diseases i.e.

Fatty liver: It is characterized by presence of fat cells in the liver. There are no marked symptoms of fatty liver. People having this disease have enlarged liver and experiences discomfort in upper abdomen.

Alcohol hepatitis: people who drink heavily suffer from alcohol hepatitis. It is the inflammation of liver and is characterized by loss of appetite, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, fever, jaundice, and tenderness. Alcohol hepatitis last for years but its effect is reversible if the person stops drinking. Severe form of alcohol hepatitis leads to life threatening complications.

Alcohol cirrhosis: It is the most severe type of alcohol-induced disease. Alcohol cirrhosis is characterized by the replacement of normal liver tissue with scar tissue. The symptoms of alcohol cirrhosis is almost similar to alcohol hepatitis but the damage caused by it is irreversible and life threatening

Complications Associated with Alcohol- induced liver diseases

Alcohol-induced liver diseases have serious life threatening complication i.e.

• Veins bleeding in the esophagus
• Enlarged spleen
• Kidney failure
• Liver cancer
• Increased blood pressure in liver
• Fluid accumulation in the abdomen
• Coma
